
Getting Your SACMI Rotary Lamps Up to Temp Fast
When you’re running high-speed PET blowing, you don’t have a second to waste. SACMI rotary machines move fast. Like, really fast. There’s just no room for the heating system to lag behind, or you’re looking at a lot of wasted plastic. That’s why we build our replacement lamps to snap to temperature almost instantly. The secret is in the heat density. We play around with the tungsten filament and the voltage to make sure the heat hits hard and fast. By packing more wattage into a shorter length, the lamp reaches those infrared levels the moment you flip the switch. Why does that matter? Because if your ramp-up is slow, you get “cold spots” in the preform. That’s how you end up with bottles that have uneven walls or that annoying pearlescent haze. Nobody wants that. It’s not just about the heat, though. It’s about the build. We use heavy-wall quartz glass to keep the filament from shaking or shifting under pressure. We also stick to R7s or Sk15 connectors. They just fit. We’re obsessive about the fit because any tiny gap in the electrical contact creates resistance. And resistance creates heat—not the good kind of heat in the filament, but the bad kind at the terminal. If you leave that alone, you’re just burning out your sockets. Here is the catch. High-intensity lamps are great, but they’re demanding. They put a lot more stress on your power supply. If you’re pushing for those lightning-fast start-up times with higher wattage, you’ve got to keep your cooling fans spotless. If the air around the lamp housing gets too hot, your tubes are going to die a lot sooner. It’s a simple trade-off: you get the speed, but you have to stay on top of the thermal management. That’s just the reality of running a high-output PET oven.
