
Making Your SMI Blow Molding Lamps Just Work
Let’s be honest: there is nothing more frustrating than being locked into one vendor because of some proprietary lamp spec. It feels like a trap. You want to upgrade or replace a part, but you’re stuck with whatever the original manufacturer tells you to buy. We decided to fix that. We built our infrared lamps to be simple, drop-in replacements for SMI and pretty much any other global blow molding line. We just looked at the global average for PET heating ovens and matched the physical footprint and electrical load. No drama, no special adapters. Just a part that fits. Getting the heat right The real trick with PET preforms is the heat density. If you have “cold spots,” you end up with bottles that have uneven walls—which is basically a waste of plastic. To stop that, we use a high-voltage, high-wattage setup in the quartz tube. It pushes short-wave IR radiation exactly where it needs to go. The result? A steady, consistent heat flux across the whole tube. Your bottles come out looking the way they should. The gritty details We didn’t cut corners on the materials. We use heavy-wall quartz glass because thin glass bows when it gets screaming hot. We also fill them with halogen gas. It keeps the filament from burning out nearly as fast as those cheap, generic lamps you see online. And then there are the connectors. We stick to R7s and SK15 bases. Why? Because they actually fit tight. If a connector is loose, you get arcing. And if you get arcing, you’re going to fry your lamp holders in a matter of weeks. Nobody wants to deal with that. A quick heads-up on installation Since we spec these down to the millimeter, they’ll fit over 95% of the machines out there. You can swap them during a scheduled stop without having to mess around with your oven reflectors. But here is a tip: if you’re putting a high-wattage lamp into an old machine, your cooling fans are going to work harder. If your vents are clogged with dust, that ambient heat will eat your lamps alive. **Do yourself a favor and check your airflow before you wire them up.**It takes two minutes and saves you a massive headache later.
