
Stop Fighting Heat Fluctuations in Your SIPA Rotary Machines
Ever feel like you’re chasing your tail with your SIPA machine? You’re seeing wall thickness variations, bottles are failing, and you’ve probably spent hours tweaking oven settings only to have it crash again. Here’s the thing: it’s usually not the settings. It’s the lamps. Most people just grab “near-match” replacements. But in a rotary system, “close enough” is a recipe for disaster. If the wattage or voltage is even slightly off, you get cold spots. Simple as that. The danger of the “almost” match We make our IR lamps to be exact drop-in replacements for a reason. Think about it—your preforms are flying through that machine. You have a tiny window of time to hit the exact temperature needed. If a lamp is off by even 5%, the wavelength shifts. The heat density changes. And when the voltage doesn’t line up? Your controller tries to make up for it by overcompensating. That just kills your filaments faster. We stick to the original SIPA specs so the heat stays steady across the whole zone. No surprises. The nitty-gritty: Quartz and Connectors We use high-purity quartz because these lamps take a beating. They heat up and cool down fast, and cheap glass just can’t handle that kind of thermal shock. Plus, we use specific halogen fills to keep the heat in the shortwave spectrum—which is exactly what PET likes to soak up. Then there are the connectors (the R7s or Sk15 types). If the fit is loose, you get arcing. You might not see it, but you’ll see it on your HMI as a random power drop. It looks like a heating fluctuation, but really, it’s just a bad connection ruining your socket. A quick reality check on reflectors You can buy the most powerful, perfectly matched shortwave lamps in the world, but they won’t do a thing if your reflectors are trashed. If they’re pitted or oxidized, the heat just bounces away instead of hitting the plastic. You’ll see the lamp glowing red hot, but your preform stays cold. Before you swap everything out, give your reflectors a good clean. Once they’re shiny again, that’s when you’ll actually feel the difference a power-matched lamp makes.
