Why it’s time to ditch those old bathroom heat lamps
We’ve all been there. You step out of a hot shower into a freezing room, flip the switch, and suddenly you’re being blinded by a light so bright it feels like an interrogation lamp. Those old-school “light-warmers” are basically just giant, high-wattage bulbs. They blast a narrow beam of heat in one spot, leaving the rest of you shivering. It’s not a great way to start the day. The battle against steam Here is the real problem: bathrooms are wet. Steam gets everywhere. In those old units, moisture creeps into the housing and hits the hot quartz tube. That sudden temperature jump—what the engineers call “thermal shock”—is why those bulbs crack or just burn out out of nowhere. That’s why we’ve moved toward high-IP infrared heaters. In plain English? They’re sealed tight. The wiring and the chassis are protected, so when your bathroom turns into a sauna, the heater doesn’t short out. It just keeps working. Heat you can actually feel There’s a big difference in how these things actually warm you up. Old halogen lamps mostly just give off bright light. Modern infrared units are different. They push energy into a spectrum that warms your skin and the surfaces around you directly, rather than trying to heat up all the air in the room. We use coated quartz tubes to spread that heat out. No more “spotlight” effect. You get a wider, softer warmth that actually covers you. One heads-up, though: these are more sensitive to power swings. If your home has a lot of voltage spikes, it can wear out the filament faster than a cheap light bulb would. Getting them installed The good news is that these usually fit right into the ceiling holes you already have. They plug into your standard bathroom circuits, though you’ll want to make sure your breaker can handle that first “kick” when they turn on. And because everything is sealed, you can stop worrying about dust or splashes ruining the reflectors. You won’t be climbing a ladder every few months to swap out a corroded bulb. It’s just… easier.
